Advent Sunday Sermon Series
During this Advent season, we will take time during our Sunday gatherings to reflect and meditate on the multifaceted miracle of Christ’s coming into the world.
One of the most unique and sacred things about having a baby is getting to choose a name for them. Of course when baby Jesus was born, his parents named him Jesus (Jesus means “God saves” in Hebrew). Joseph was told by an angel that was to be his name. But, Jesus wasn’t the only name that he was given. Long before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah had a vision from God about a savior who would come and bring everlasting peace to the world. He foretold that a child would be born who would be the kind of ruler or governor the people had always wanted. He said that this ruler would be called by four special names or honorific titles:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
These titles represented the kind of rule for which the people of Israel were longing. More than that, they describe some of the deepest longings and needs we all have as humans. Yet, these longings were fulfilled in the birth, life and ministry of Jesus in very unexpected and surprising ways. Although Israel longed for the fulfillment of these prophetic visions, many in Israel missed the fulfillment of them in Jesus. He just didn’t match their expectations.
With all that in mind, we want to focus each Sunday of Advent on discerning together how it is that Jesus fulfilled and continues to fulfill these titles that the prophet Isaiah anticipated, and how these titles mean good news for our lives and the world today.
We look forward to worshiping with you!
