The Orthodox Way Study

This Fall at CitySalt, we are taking time to explore six foundational ideas about God anchored in the Bible and early Christian tradition. As a guide in this series, we will be using the book The Orthodox Way by Kallistos Ware. This book, written by a brilliant scholar of Eastern Orthodoxy, has proven to be a solid and hopeful guide for many people searching to make sense of who the Christian God really is and how Jesus Christ has made God known. Rather than presenting attributes of God as dry, abstract doctrines, Ware frames theology as a living, experiential journey toward communion with a relational God in whom we live and move and have our being. With Ware’s book as a guide, we will explore these six core attributes of God:

  • God as Mystery

  • God as Trinity

  • God as Humanity

  • God as Creator

  • God as Spirit

  • God as Prayer

We will preach on these themes during our Sunday worship gatherings, and if you are interested in going further with these themes and discussing them with others, we are facilitating a weekly small group gathering on Thursday evenings throughout this series around these same themes. This will be a space to share a meal together and discuss the theme for the week based on material from the Sunday sermon and the corresponding chapter in Ware’s book. The small group will meet weekly for six weeks on Thursday evenings from approximately 6-8PM. We will plan to eat together for the first 45 minutes or so and then transition to a discussion of the theme for the week using Ware's book and the Sunday sermon as a launch point. Registratration is required to attend this group. You can find the registration and other details about the group here.
